General FAQ
Is there a minimum requirement to be a U-PIC customer?
No. We have programs available for every shipper, small and large.
What if I do not have an electronic shipping system?
U-PIC has many different options for reporting insured shipments. We are integrated
into several shipping software applications, and can provide export options if you
are using carrier software.
How can you offer insurance at such low costs?
Carriers are in the business of transporting goods. Our main focus is on insurance
and our goal is to offer competitive rates to save you money, which is an option
we believe every shipper should have.
If U-PIC does not want me to specify that my parcel is insured on the outside of
the package, how do I show to my customer that the parcel is insured?
Click here to print insurance cards
that you can include inside of your packages.
What is a 'DVU'?
A 'DVU' is a Declared Value Unit. It is the equivalent to $100 worth of coverage.
For example, a package valued at $300 would cost 3 DVUs. DVUs are calculated in
$100 increments and are not pro-rated.
How do I file a claim?
You may submit a claim to U-PIC by faxing, mailing, emailing, a signed and dated
claim form with the required documents. Claim forms are provided directly on our
website under our claim page. For detailed instructions
on what is required when filing a claim, please see our claim filing instructions
also located within the claims section on the website. U-PIC also offers it’s customers
the ability to file online. When you file online you will receive an immediate confirmation
of the filing along with your claim ID. Please note that you will still be required
to fax, mail, or email the paperwork in to us signed and dated as required.
Who is the consignee?
The consignee is the buyer.
Do I do anything different if my claim is for the U.S. Postal Service?
Please note that timeframes listed below are counted on the basis of calendar days
Claims for USPS do have different filing requirements than other standard carriers
(i.e. UPS, FedEx, LTL’s). If you are filing a claim for a lost domestic parcel,
you must wait 21 days from the date of shipment prior to filing a claim with U-PIC.
For international and APO/FPO shipments, you must wait 45 days from the date of
shipment prior to filing a claim with U-PIC. Italy requires a wait period of 60
days from the date of shipment. If filing a claim for a damaged parcel, you may
file immediately.
All claims must be filed within 90 days from the date of shipment.
For USPS shipments we require a signed affidavit from the consignee (the intended
recipient) of the parcel stating non-receipt or damage to the parcel.
If you would like additional information on the required documents, please visit
our claims page.
Are there any excluded zip codes for insured shipments?
Yes. For coins and jewelry, U-PIC will not insure shipments to or from the following
zip codes:
10017
10036
94102
94108

Online FAQ
Are there any excluded zip codes for insured shipments?
Yes. For coins and jewelry, U-PIC will not insure shipments to or from the following
zip codes:
10017
10036
94102
94108
Can U-PIC provide insurance for jewelry through the website on an as-needed basis?
Yes. U-PIC has recently added jewelry to the Buy Online order option. The rate for
shipping jewelry is a little higher than normal due to the heightened risk involved
in insuring these items but you will still enjoy a discount to the carrier rates.
Why will U-PIC only remit claim checks to the person whose credit card purchased
the insurance?
It is vital that U-PIC and U-PIC’s customers prevent insurance fraud whenever possible.
By remitting checks only to the owner of the purchasing credit card, U-PIC can reduce
and false claims using stolen credit cards. This helps U-PIC keep the cost of insurance
as low as possible for it’s customers.
I order insurance online from U-PIC frequently. How can I keep from having to fill
out my information over and over again?
U-PIC’s site will store a 'cookie' on your machine whenever you purchase insurance
online with us. The next time you visit the online ordering page; the U-PIC system
should recognize you and automatically fill in the fields most likely to have not
changed between orders. Fields that are expected to change, like Package IDs and
ship dates are left blank. You will also be required to re-certify that you are
not insuring restricted items.
If your browser cannot read cookies, or if you have elected to turn cookies off,
you may still receive the same benefit by entering any of your prior order IDs in
the field on the welcome page along with your zip code. The U-PIC system will retrieve
the information from your prior order and insert the data into your form to save
typing and speed the ordering process.
Does U-PIC retain my credit card information on its servers?
No. U-PIC wants to keep your financial data private and secure. At the time of an
online order, U-PIC gathers your credit card information via SSL (Secure Socket
Layer) and sends the encrypted credit card information to our credit card processor.
Once the transaction is completed by the processor, the credit card information
is destroyed. U-PIC never retains your credit card number or expiration date in
its databases.
